I accidentally deleted RAW images from my Nikon camera before transferring them, and some were important event photos I really need back. I’m looking for the best way to recover deleted Nikon RAW files from the camera or memory card without making things worse.
If you wiped Nikon photos and you do not have a backup, I would not write them off yet. What matters most is what happened after the loss. I learned this the hard way with an SD card from a weekend trip. The delete itself was not the killer. Shooting more photos onto the same card was.
First move, stop using the card. Right now. Do not take more shots. Do not reformat it again. Do not copy files onto it. Deleted images usually sit there until new data lands on top of them. Every write hurts your odds.
Also, treat this as a memory card problem, not a Nikon body problem. In most cases your camera saved those shots to an SD card or another removable card, so recovery works better when you pull the card out and read it directly on your computer with a card reader. I got worse results over USB through the camera, and scans took longer too.
If you have no backup, I’d start with recovery software. I used Disk Drill. It picked up Nikon file types like NEF, NRW, and JPEG without me fiddling with obscure settings.
What I’d do:
- Take the SD card out of the Nikon.
- Plug it into your computer with a card reader.
- Install Disk Drill on your computer, not on the SD card.
- Pick the SD card in the app and hit Search for lost data.
- Run Universal Scan. In my case, it worked fine for deleted photos and a quick-formatted card.
- When the scan ends, preview the files. If the images open and look normal, your chances are usuallly decent.
- Save recovered files to your computer or another drive. Do not put them back onto the same SD card.
If videos are missing too, run Advanced Camera Recovery after the first pass. I’ve seen regular scans miss camera clips, especially when files were fragmented.
A few things trip people up:
- An SD card showing as empty does not always mean the photos are gone. I’ve seen this happen after deletion, file system damage, and quick format jobs. If the old data has not been overwritten, recovery still has a shot.
- If you recover RAW files in NEF format and Windows refuses to open them, do not assume they are broken. Sometimes the file is fine and your viewer simply does not support Nikon RAW.
- Recovered files often come back with weird names, odd numbering, or no original folder structure. Annoying, yeah. Normal too. Recovery tools often rebuild files from signatures instead of the original file table.
Before you scan, check the obvious places people forget. I once found a full set sitting on a laptop import folder from two days earlier. Look through your computer, external drives, SnapBridge, Nikon Image Space, Google Photos, Dropbox, or whatever sync tool you had turned on. You might already have copies and not know it.
There is one point where I’d stop messing with it. If the card does not show up on any computer, keeps disconnecting, or has physical damage, skip DIY recovery and go to a pro service. A failing card tends to get worse while you poke at it.
So yeah, deleted RAW files, an emptied card, or an SD card suddenly looking blank does not always mean you lost everything. If you stop using the card fast and scan it soon, your odds are a lot better.
If the photos matter, make a byte-for-byte image of the SD card first. This is the one part I’d add to what @mikeappsreviewer said. Scanning the original card works, sure, but I prefer cloning it first so you only stress the card once. If the card starts throwing read errors, you still have a working copy to scan.
Use any disk imaging tool on your computer. Save the image to your internal drive or an external SSD. Then run Disk Drill against the card image, not the card itself. That gives you a safer workflow for Nikon RAW photo recovery, esp if the card is old or cheap.
Also, check Nikon software caches if you ever previewed or imported before. NX Studio, Lightroom, Bridge, and Photo Mechanic often leave previews, sidecars, or import records behind. You might not get full NEF files from those spots, but for event shots, even full-size JPEG previews are better than nothing.
One place I disagree a bit with @mikeappsreviewer, I would not spend too long hunting sync folders before securing the card. Do the no-write steps first, clone it, then look for backups.
For Nikon RAW recovery, file types to look for are NEF and sometimes JPG sidecars. If Disk Drill finds files with generic names, sort by size. Event RAWs from the same body tend to cluster in similar file sizes, which makes triage faster.

If the card asks to be formatted, don’t do it. That trips up tons of poeple.
One thing I’d add to what @mikeappsreviewer and @viaggiatoresolare said: check whether your Nikon was writing RAW to one slot and JPEG to the other, if your body has dual card slots. A lot of people panic over deleted NEF files and forget there may still be usable JPEGs sitting on card #2. Not ideal, but for event work, “not ideal” beats “gone forever.”
I also wouldn’t put too much faith in the camera’s own playback screen. Sometimes thumbnails vanish and people assume the files are toast. The metadata/index may be broken while the actual image data is still recoverable.
For Nikon RAW photo recovery, NEF files are the main target, but also search for small embedded preview JPEGs. Some recovery apps can pull those out even when the full RAW is damaged. That can save a few shots. Disk Drill is solid here because it tends to identify Nikon RAW formats cleanly and lets you preview what’s actually recoverable before exporting.
If the card is healthy, another smart move is to use a write blocker or at least lock the SD card before connecting it. Not perfect, but it reduces the chance of accidental writes from the computer. People skip that all the time.
Also, if this happened after an in-camera delete and not a full format, your odds are usualy better than people think. Full format, bad card, or new photos taken after deletion is where things get ugly fast.
For anyone searching this later: recover deleted Nikon RAW photos by removing the memory card, avoiding all new writes, scanning for NEF files with recovery software like Disk Drill, and saving recovered files to a different drive.

Short version: stop using the card, check for a second card/JPEG backup, recover NEF files from the card itself, not through the camera, and don’t save anything back to that same card. Thats the part people mess up most.
One extra angle not covered enough: if the delete happened in-camera, Nikon often leaves enough metadata behind that recovery quality depends a lot on how fragmented the card was before the event. Big NEF bursts on a nearly full card are harder to reconstruct than singles on a mostly empty card. So if Disk Drill shows lots of recoverable files but some NEFs won’t open, that does not automatically mean total failure. It can mean partial fragmentation.
I slightly disagree with the “preview opens = good” idea. For RAW, previews can be misleading because you may only be seeing the embedded JPEG, not a fully intact NEF. Verify by opening recovered files in NX Studio, Lightroom, or Capture One and checking whether exposure/WB controls behave normally.
A few Nikon-specific things to check:
- Dual slot behavior: some Nikons write overflow, backup, or RAW/JPEG split differently than you remember.
- Card type: XQD/CFexpress recover differently from SD, sometimes better, sometimes not.
- Hidden DCIM variants: Nikon folder structure can get weird after card errors. Manually inspect the card image for orphaned folders.

I’d follow the caution from @viaggiatoresolare, @suenodelbosque, and @mikeappsreviewer about avoiding writes, but I’d add this: once you recover anything important, compare recovered file sizes against known-good NEFs from the same camera. That’s a fast sanity check before you trust the set.
